My Background

Like most who start their own business, the initial motivation was simply to not have a boss, and to not be at the whim of their moods and idiosyncrasies! The next motivation was to challenge myself and to try and live a life on my own terms. If it is to be it is up to me!

I have always been interested in science, at first it was astronomy, my dad bought a huge telescope when I was 10, we spent many a night freezing in the garden trying to find various galaxies and nebula. Then it was physics, biology and geology, in that order.

When I became a vibration analyst at age 21 (in 2002), I realised that this was something I could get really interested in. Later when I heard the term 'The Science of Condition Monitoring', I knew this was for me.

And so it goes. Starting in land based industries I later moved into the shipping industry. I started VTS in 2010 and by chance landed in the oil industry, working in Aberdeen from 2011 to 2015. Then my real passion came to life when VTS focused primarily on the shipping industry from 2015. I was back on ships, and escaped the oil rigs!

It is impossible to guess how many ships I have visited over the years, it must be more than 400, maybe 500. Many of these are revisits to the same vessels of course. I have developed a sixth sense when it comes to vibration. I tend to know the problem with a machine just by walking towards it, which is confirmed shortly after by the data collector.

I am now reminded of a quote .... 'me, me, me is dull, dull, dull', so I will leave it at that. Oh yes, I have a lovely wife and two equally lovely kids, Jacob and Jessica :)
